The mission of the NES Department is:
* to disseminate general knowledge and appreciation of the languages, literatures, material cultures and civilizations of the ancient, medieval and modern Near and Middle East to undergraduate majors and across the Berkeley campus as a whole;
* to encourage and advance scholarly research in those same areas;
* to train the next generation of scholars and teachers in the languages, literatures, material cultures and civilizations of the ancient, medieval and modern Near and Middle East.
